Best Travel Apps for Your Indian Sojourns
Komoot
This is a GPS powered map app that offers turn by turn navigation for off-the-road trips. It uses topographic maps to guide walkers and bikers explore off-the-beaten paths data to get the best views. Komoot provides information on the surface, distance, elevation of overall difficulty of the path you’re taking. It will also track how far you’ve travelled, how much is yet to be covered and places along the way you can stop to grab a tasty bite or catch a good view. If you discover a cool spot, you can capture some cool photos of the place and recommend it to fellow users of the app.
Komoot also allows users to download maps for offline use so you don’t have to depend on weak internet connections to get around. Some region maps are available for free but others can be downloaded only after payment of a small fee.

Confirmtkt
Apparently about 22 lakh train tickets are booked in India everyday and about a third of them are waitlisted. That’s probably the reason you find yourself forever waiting for your ticket to be confirmed. Confirmtkt is an app that promises to save you the mental torture of worrying about the issue. Based on your PNR information, the app will predict your chances of getting a confirmed ticket and offering you alternate travel options when your chances of getting the ticket are low. The app also has tons of other features such as train schedules and running statuses, alternative ways to get ticket in same Indian rail train, fare enquiry and calculator and more.
Rooms Tonite
Launched in early 2015 Rooms Tonite from a Bengaluru based company aims to help you find last minute hotel bookings for not more than a 3 day stay. The app lists hotels from 300+ destinations in India with more inventories being regularly added to the list. You can find hotel deals in all categories, Comfort, Premium and Luxury and you’ll receive 100% booking confirmation directly from the hotel within minutes. Simply, select a destination, view the choice of hotels, check out all the features of the hotel and see its location on the integrated map and then book via secured payment gateway. You might want to be a little cautious with the app though as there have been issues with confirmations.

I doubt anyone would survive anywhere without TripAdvisor. This app is packed with honest reviews, opinions, videos and photos by travelers so you know all those glitzy photos you saw in the magazines were probably not as close to the real thing. There’s also information on a whole lot of stuff such as the lowest airfare, best hotels and restaurants, fun things to do wherever you go and booking options to plan your trip. You can also look up the forums for any specific question you may have about your travel.

The app can be quite comprehensive with information available on wind, precipitations, extreme weather warnings, weather photos, webcams and more. What’s cool about the app is that you can get forecasts in periods of 3 hours for up to 3 days in advance.
Voice Translator
The Indian subcontinent is a language potpourri, but you get by in most places with some knowledge of Hindi and English. This translator app does a pretty decent job of helping you speak phrases in Hindi or other Indian language and have it translated in English or another Indian language. Best part, you can even get your answers translated in English. Translations can also saved locally offline for use later.
