Spiti is a mountain valley located high up in the Himalayas in the north eastern part of Himachal Pradesh. Spiti essentially means “The Middle Land” sitting right in between Tibet and India. Spiti is surrounded by high mountain ranges and deep valleys and the passes connecting it to the outside world are often cut off in winter due to heavy snow.
Come spring and summer, the place is alive with the sound of the hills. Nomatic goat herders come to the villages to graze their Gaddi sheep and tourists venture to discover its mystical aura. Spiti is one of the least populated regions in the world, but is home to a distinctive Buddhist culture. It is also home to a well preserved Buddhist heritage center and to one of the oldest monasteries in the world.

Ecosphere, a social enterprise that has been working since 2000 in the area is deeply involved in promoting responsible tourism along with conservation and development of the economy of Spiti. The organization has received several accolades and rewards for efforts that they have taken in the field of conservation and the environment.
Ecosphere offers a variety of travel programs to eco-lovers and adventurers who want to experience the mystical and hidden enchantments of Spiti. Travelers don’t simply come to catch the beauty of the valley, they are also encouraged to take part in various volunteering efforts ranging from a fortnight to a month to help conserve the area. Programs include garbage disposal, construction of drainage, cattle herding, collecting medicinal plants, working in the monastery, building the greenhouse and so on.
Spiti’s upcoming travel program is The Essential Spiti & Kinnaur Jeep Safari, which ideally begins at Manali and takes you through the stunning valleys past the rivers Sutlej, Baspa, Spiti and Pin. The trip saunters into the stunning Kinnaur valley along the river Sutlej and winds its way past the enchanting Sangla valley whose backdrop will leave you breathless and spellbound.
On the safari, you visit villages which are at some of the highest points in the world, one as high as 4513 meters. You will also visit the 1000+ year old monastery and experience rustic life in traditional homestays. A trip to a fossil center is also arranged. The jeep safari experience will give you a great insight into a land almost forgotten, its culture, practices and history.
The 8-12 day trip packs as much of the landscape of Spiti and Kinnaur as possible and the journey will be done exclusively by jeep. The accommodation includes a specialty camp/ retreat, traditional homestay, or a guesthouse/ hotel and promises to deliver every level of comfort a traveler can expect.
